For a number of years Thorburn Consultants has been involved in the development of geothermal power facilities in the thermally active Wairakei region near Taupo.  Commissioned in 1997, the Poihipi Power Station produces some 35 Megawatts of electricity.  A new development currently under construction, the McLachlan Power Station, will add a further 60 Megawatts capacity to the nation's electricity grid - this is enough to power the entire city of Hamilton.

Both of these power projects have required extensive earthworks and general civil and structural engineering on a grand scale.  Due to the nature of the site preparation and construction, the constraints of the Resource Management Act have been of prime concern, with careful consideration being given to environmental impact and the erosion & sediment control measures.
